Product Description

Over the centuries, the prophetic book of Zechariah has suffered from accusations of obscurity and has frustrated readers seeking to unlock its treasures. This work by Mark Boda provides insightful commentary on Zechariah, with great sensitivity to its historical, literary, and theological dimensions. Including a fresh translation of Zechariah from the original Hebrew, Boda delivers deep and thorough reflection on a too-often-neglected book of the Old Testament.

Review

—  Catholic Biblical Quarterly
"Boda''s commentary is commendable in every way. It is well informed (this is an understatement), consistently converses with other views, and is clear. He treats the minutiae thoroughly, without losing sight of the bigger picture of sections or of the book. Moreover, he is sensitive to the historical, redemptive-historical, and canonical contexts of the book. . . . For anyone looking to teach, preach, or write on the Book of Zechariah, Boda''s commentary should be referenced often."

Tremper Longman III
— Westmont College
"The book of Zechariah fascinates us and informs us about the postexilic Judean community''s relationship with God. Mark Boda, a master of this time period and this genre, opens up the book to readers today. His commentary is clear and profound, informative and illuminating. Everyone who studies Zechariah must read Boda''s work, which makes an important contribution to scholarship and to the church."

Gordon McConville
— University of Gloucestershire
"A most welcome addition to the excellent NICOT series. Boda is an established expert on this difficult and wonderful book, and here he brings his huge learning to bear on it in such a way as to unfold its many dimensions. His commentary is always accessible and is governed by a deep concern to interpret theologically and pastorally. . . . A model for interpreting the Prophets and, indeed, the whole Old Testament."

H. G. M. Williamson
— University of Oxford
"In this substantial commentary Boda brings to a climax his many years of detailed study of Zechariah, deploying his considerable scholarly strengths in a comprehensive yet clear manner. . . . This volume will serve for many years as a standard resource for scholars and laypeople alike."

David L. Petersen
— Candler School of Theology
"A major and comprehensive commentary on Zechariah. It is replete with a fresh translation, detailed philological and text-critical notes, and commentary using a variety of critical perspectives, with particular attention to intertextual issues. . . . Anyone interested in the book of Zechariah will need to consult this volume."

Iain Provan
— Regent College
"This fine exposition of Zechariah represents a most welcome addition to commentary on this book. Mark Boda has a great eye both for the detail of the text and for its intertextuality."

My impression from reading through this is that it is an outrageously bloated technical analysis that is possibly helpful for questions of textual criticism, variant analysis, word studies, in order to arrive at some idea of what the text is supposed to mean.

Imagine, though, reading through the commentary on Zechariah 9:9-10 and not finding a single reference to its NT fulfillment in Christ (cf. John 12:14-15)!

A further check in the index shows not a single reference to the New Testament at all.

If you want a commentary that examines each leaf in each tree but fails to find the forest, this is a good choice.

The author is clearly in a discussion with other scholars, each trying to understand and explain the very real ambiguities in this biblical text. For this reason, the book overflows with the most minute details, something necessary in the context of a professional discussion. But for others beside the 1%, the book will be wildly difficult to manage. The translation of the prophetic text is given bit by bit, with virtually no visual cues and no combined text to refer to. This makes it virtually impossible to scan a whole section of the original text to reinforce your understanding of what Professor Boda is trying to say. The book is certainly valuable, but it''s for the very few.

As a pastor I love the NICOT series of commentaries. The commentary on the Book of Zechariah does not fail to challenge and educate the reader as to the context and purpose behind the prophet. While I use this commentary as a pastor, this should not keep those seeking a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Old Testament away. The NICOT is a great series and my preferred commentaries.

The Book of Zechariah is written by Mark J. Boda and published by Eerdmans is one of the well written modern commentaries on this book of the Bible. The Book of Zechariah is the most recent volume of the New International Commentary on the Old Testament, edited by Robert L. Hubbard, a historic and landmark series, one which is synonymous with superior scholarship and excellence exegesis, this volume continues this legacy. While Boda is no stranger to commentaries, yet this is his first volume in this series on scripture. This volume is one of the most through and prolific commentaries I have ever had the privilege of reading, while I disagree with some of the conclusions that Boda draws, his scholarly approach is commendable.

The Book of Zechariah begins with the typical study into the introductory matters of this book of the Bible, yet while introductions are common; this introduction is atypical of most commentaries. It is not that this work does dive into history and recent scholarship, which The Book of Zechariah does a phenomenal job of rather, it is the thoroughness that Boda takes with these introductory matters which makes this commentary atypical. In a day where these matters are either glossed over to get to the exegesis of the text or are so cumbersome that they become useless, Boda though has found a good balance in being thorough, communicating depth and attention to recent scholarship, without losing the forest in the trees.
In reference to the commentary on the text of this book of prophecy, Boda takes painstaking care in carefully showing the original context of passage while sprinkling practical application to the reader throughout the textual commentary. Yet while this commentary can be technical it is not so overtly technical that it obscures the helpfulness of the commentary.

With regard of recommending The Book of Zechariah, to others I would whole heartily recommend this commentary to students of scripture, with one caveat. By this I mean I recommend this work to Pastors, Scholars, Bible Teachers, Bible College Students, and Seminary Students, there is enough scholarly weight to this text to understand a particularly issue in the text while giving aid to pastors in preaching the text. The caveat is to the lay person who is looking for a commentary to read as a devotional, while a basic knowledge of Greek is not needed for understanding The Book of Zechariah, it is helpful and would not be suitable for devotional reading. There are many commentaries about the book of Zechariah available at this moment but New International Commentary on the Old Testament The Book of Zechariah, is a step above the herd.

This book was provided to me free of charge from Eerdmans Publishing in exchange for an unbiased, honest review.

This is what an exhaustive commentary looks like. This commentary on the Minor Prophet of Zechariah is almost as large as the one on Psalms in this same New International Commentary series. I am not suggesting it is exhausting though. A judicious use of footnotes has made for a volume at once effective for scholarly pastors and academia. I can’t imagine the hours Boda must have put in here.

You would expect the Introduction to be massive in a volume so large, yet it is a manageable 45 pages. That means the bulk of the book is actual commentary on the text.

The Introduction contains a textual history as well as a competent historical background. A section called “Compositional History” overlapped with structure and was worthwhile. I couldn’t personally agree with some of his other conclusions on how the composition came together, but he still trusts the text. His section on the message of Zechariah was good as far as it went.

Again, it’s the actual commentary that will make this volume important for the next 50 years. It seems most every angle is discussed and it is almost encyclopedic. Still, as most will read it one text at a time, the depth will be appreciated. For that reason, I must give a strong recommendation.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

The Gospel of John records in 5:39 a saying by Jesus Christ: “… it is they (the Scriptures) that bear witness about me, …”. Would that saying sensitize thenceforth any would-be interpreters how they approach the Biblical texts? If interpreters, while handling an OT text find it appropriate to engage with their fellow commentators, whether contemporary or ancient, how much more would it seem necessary for these same interpreters to also comment on those NT texts that make direct quotation or allusion to it? The response to the above queries is at best ambivalent if one reads Mark J. Boda’s 2016 commentary on the book of Zechariah. Apart from a brief paragraph entitled “Zechariah For Today” (pg. 44), Boda largely eschews making any messianic references in his commentary proper. At various points, he expresses his apprehension of characterizing Zechariah’s vision reports as eschatological (pgs. 102, 211): “ … there are reasons to see in Zechariah’s vision reports some of the ingredients that will be key components of the later apocalyptic form, it is not helpful to emphasize the connection, since the reading strategy associated with the later form cannot be imposed on the earlier form [vision reports that relate to recent events] without falling into anachronistic error”. (pg. 102, see also n.123) Such warning is indeed perspicacious and prudent, as Boda demonstrates trenchantly the historical groundings and relevance of the prophet’s message to its late 6th to the mid-5th century audience. Questions remain, however, whether interpreters of OT prophetic texts are inescapably caught between mutually exclusive quandaries of imminent visions and apocalypses. Given his rather restrictive definition of “eschatological” (pg. 211), it is apparent that Boda sees the answer in the affirmative. Apart from the above, Boda’s commentary on the Book of Zechariah is another (after his 2004 NIVAC) important contribution to the study of this prophetic book. He offers often exhaustive references to words used in other parts of the OT. His expert translation, explications of textual relationships, cogent exegesis and fair interactions with recent commentators are invaluable resources. One cannot help after reading this substantial commentary but feel thankful and musing at the same time. There is an urge to turn to those quotations in the NT and ask: “what about …?” Were these NT writers mistaken? For a commentary in a series that claims its affiliation, and by inference its readership, in “evangelicalism”, there is an interpretative void yet to be filled.
